This is like being in a fairy tale indeed. Located just one hour south of Stuttgart by car this castle is easy to get to. There is a lovely hiking trail starting at the main parking area. Right at the beginning is the Lichtenstein castle and a little farther down the path the site of another castle, the “Alt-Lichtenstein” of which only the ruins now remain.
The Lichtenstein castle itself is a real beauty and an impressive sight as it sits on a rock and can only be reached via the draw bridge. It is easy to imagine how this castle was impregnable once that bridge was up.
The entire castle and adjacent buildings are very well renovated and maintained. Although there is a scenic 11 km (6.8 mi) hiking trail, one hardly wants to leave the sight of the castle. The trail is a certified “premium” hiking trail and extremely well marked. It is definitely worthwhile doing that loop trail as it offers wonderful views and impressions of the landscape, the Swabian Jura. A restaurant and a small cafeteria with nice outside seating are close to the main parking area, though it may fill up quick on a nice day and on weekends and holidays.
There is a treetop zip line adventure park which is great fun. It is absolutely worthwhile and easily turns this visit into a full day activity. 10 courses are available with different difficulty levels. Leave some energy for this activity though as some of the courses require grit.
Gear: Hiking boots are recommendable but with the trail so well-prepared sneakers/loafers would even be sufficient here. Light backpack with water and snacks.
