Ever since watching The Vikings starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis as a kid, I wanted to explore the area where it took place. I later found out that some of this picture was shot at the Walchensee lake in Bavaria, Germany. Some other Viking movies made here include the German kids’ movie “Wicky und die starken Männer”.
The scenery and setting of this lake are majestic and fjord like indeed. What better way to explore the lake then to circle it with the mountain bike? It is about 25 km and a very easy tour with some nice spots for swimming or, as the water is cold, feet dangling at least. The eastern part of the trail is shared with the road so one must ride a little more carefully. The northern shore is practically car free and even the eastern stretch of the path is a no-through toll road with little traffic (it does get busy on weekends with beach seekers but there is a speed limit on that stretch). Biking is fun in this area for sure.
A farm in Sachenbach is right on the trail and they offer excellent cakes and pies and some heartier “Vesper” as well. In Einsiedel one can rent canoes which is strongly recommendable as it is great fun. From Einsidel stay on the path right along the lake towards Zwergern. This is a beautiful stretch with lovely views. Between a little monastery and a campground some areas are protected from the wind and are perfect for swimming and sun bathing. The Walchensee lake: A great outdoors place!
